What Is a Channel Letter Sign?
A channel letter sign is a set of custom, three-dimensional letters mounted to your building. Each letter is built as its own metal shell with a lit face. Together they spell out your business name in bold, readable form. You see them on storefronts, restaurants, banks, medical offices, and office towers all over New Orleans. They look sharp during the day. At night, they glow.

How a channel letter is built
Think of each letter as a shallow box. The back and sides are formed from rust-resistant aluminum. Low-voltage LEDs sit inside. A translucent acrylic face goes on the front and lets the light shine through. That is the whole idea. Simple parts, built to last outdoors.

The three ways to light them
The lighting style sets the look. It also affects the price. Most signs use one of three styles.
Front-lit is the classic. The face glows outward. It is bright and easy to read from the road. Our curved storefront letters for Café Beignet on Canal Street are a good example of front-lit done well.
Halo-lit is the upscale look. The face is solid. The light escapes behind each letter and creates a soft glow on the wall. Our towering gold halo-lit set for Xavier University shows how striking this can be.
Combination uses both. The face glows and the halo glows. It makes a strong statement at night.
Some signs skip the lighting. Non-lit dimensional letters still look great by day. They cost less too.

How they mount to your building
Channel letters are a strong fit when you want a professional, permanent sign that reads well day and night. They work for a single storefront. They also work for a full brand rollout across many locations. A few things are worth checking first. Your city has sign codes. Your landlord may have rules. Power needs to reach the sign. A good sign partner checks all of this during design. Then there are no surprises at permitting or install.
Built for the Gulf South
Our weather is tough on signs. Heat, humidity, rain, and salt air wear down cheap materials fast. Quality channel letters here use rust-resistant aluminum and sealed LEDs. They are installed by crews who know our wind and permitting rules. That is how a sign still looks great years later.
Frequently Asked Questions about Channel Letters
Are channel letters the same as a box sign? No. A box sign, or cabinet sign, is one enclosed lightbox. Channel letters are individual letters. They look more custom.
Do they still use neon? Rarely. LEDs are the standard now. They use less energy and last longer.
How long do they last? Many years. Quality letters with good LEDs hold up well in our climate when they are sealed and installed right.
